I have met a number of people here in New Zealand who really love to hike, you're right. In fact, the first person I ever met who was from New Zealand is an avid mountain climber. She (Mel) and I met when we were living and teaching in Japan. We lived in a beautiful little town called Nagano that was surrounded by mountains and we used to go for walks through the hills together. I can still remember one of our walks. It involved climbing up a big mountain called Togakushi. At times we had to use ropes and ladders in order to get from one section of the mountain to the other. It was pretty intense!

Have you ever climbed a mountain before?
