Summer learning journey

Day 2: A Decade of Sport

Activity 1: Chasing Great
Over the past 17 years New Zealand has experienced a number of sporting highlights, perhaps none larger than the back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories in 2011 and 2015. In both competitions our national rugby team, the All Blacks, was captained by a man named Richie McCaw. He is arguably one of the best rugby players of all time. A movie called Chasing Great was recently created to document his incredible rugby career.

Please watch the trailer for Chasing Great and read about Richie McCaw online. On your blog tell us three things that you learned about Richie that you did not know beforehand. What else would you like to know about Richie?

Facts about Richie McCaw

1.he has been watching rugby since he was 7 years old

2.he was the captin of the new zealand rugby team

3. He has tasted victory 84 times in those 95 Tests for an amazing 88

Activity 2: Sporting Heroes

In 2015, a kiwi golfer named Lydia Ko became the youngest woman in the world to reach the #1 ranking.  She was only 17 years old. Many people from here in New Zealand and overseas really admire her and think of her as a modern-day sporting hero. Who is your sporting hero? They can be a famous athlete, or even a member of your family or community. It’s completely up to you.

On your blog tell us about your sporting hero. Who are they? Why are they a hero? Include a photo of them in your blog post.

My sporting hero is Lisa Carrington. She is an incredible rower, and last year she was awarded the prestigious  Lonsdale Cup for her amazing results in 2016! She spends hours training, and I think her commitment to her sport is inspiring.
My Sporting hero is probably Richie Mccaw. He is my hero because he` was the Captain of the all blacks and he was a very good rugby player. We've won the world cup because oh him.

  1. Hey there Akesa, thanks for completing another set of activities. I'm pleased to see you are working really hard during your summer break.

I've enjoyed reading the three facts you have included about Richie Mccaw. He really was a successful captain. He certainly had a lot of awesome players and coaching staff surrounding him too. What else would you like to know about him?

    Have you seen his movie?

    Thanks, Billy

  2. Annyeonghaseyo Akesa,
my name is Cia. I am a Ako Hiko Summer Learning Journey commentator who will be working with various bloggers over the summer break.

Richie Mccaw is a popular favourite! I think he was a great captain to the All Blacks and it’s awesome how much he achieved while he was a part of the team. What do you think made him such a great rugby player? Perhaps next time you can share you thoughts about what you think his strengths are.

Also, remember that the task asks you to include a picture of your sporting hero, so in order to earn full points please edit your post to include a picture of Richie Mccaw.

You have shared three interesting facts about the ‘Salsa’, thank you for organising them into bullet points, it made it easier to read. Are you sure Cuban Son is a person? I think you may need to complete a little bit of research on that one.. Perhaps next time you could include a video of a salsa dance for people who may not have seen it before.

I look forward to reading more of your work soon!

Toe feiloa’i fo’i ('See you again' in Samoan),

    Cia.
